Another Country by James Baldwin
Oh, how I loved this book! And I always knew I would. Another Country will forever sit on my ‘favourites’ bookshelf.
A reflection on race, sexuality and resentment, it seems (I’ve only read this book of his) Baldwin has an incredible ability to see from all sides – a kind of empathy I have yet to witness in writing. I can’t believe it was published in the 60s when so many of these topics were taboo.
Another Country is set in New York, and follows a group of musicians and writers navigating their relationships with each other and the limitations the world has imposed on them.
If you’re into art (music, writing) and books that are implicitly political, you’ll enjoy this.
