How to Write an Autobiographical Novel by Alexander Chee
This book kept popping up in bookshops around New York when I was there. I finally bought a signed copy at Word Bookstore in Greenpoint when I realised Alexander Chee was the author of my favourite essay in Never Can Say Goodbye: Writers on Their Unshakable Love for New York.
How to Write an Autobiographical Novel blew me away. The pages are filled with underlines and little scribbly stars because of how many times I whispered “yessss” and had to mark the page.
Chee is a Writer with a capital W, and I’m in awe of how hard he worked for this title. He made sacrifices to make writing the thing, the only thing. And this is what it takes to be so good.
These essays are a testament to, well, the essay. And what an example of how to write a brilliant one. Very inspiring. So happy I found this! What a joy.
