On Writing by Stephen King
A must-read for writers. Absolutely integral in my eyes. I’m not a fiction writer, nor have I read a single Stephen King novel, but I certainly got a lot out of his no bullshit approach to writing.
On Writing is lean. King only says what’s absolutely necessary – in the memoir section, as well as writing advice, which I appreciated.
On Writing gives practical advice. King covers vocabulary, grammar, style, narrative devices, editing and writing practices. And he doesn't sugar coat anything. For example, “If you don't have time to read, you don't have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that.”
I like that this book gives you a good kick up the arse. It’s a stark reminder that if you want to take writing seriously you have to be prepared to bleed. It’s work, hard work. And if you think otherwise, it isn't the job for you. Definitely recommend!
