Slouching Towards Bethlehem by Joan Didion

“Remember what it was to be me: that is always the point” - Joan Didion.⁣

In her essay ‘On Keeping A Notebook’ Joan Didion says writing notes is never about keeping an accurate factual record, it’s about ordering the chaos in our lives and threading the meaningless into something that makes sense.⁣

Recorded memories are not about the details. By looking back through her notes, Didion found the descriptions she wrote about other people actually ended up being a way for her to remember previous versions of herself.⁣

“Perhaps it is difficult to see the value in having one’s self back in that kind of mood, but I do see it; I think we are well advised to keep on nodding terms with the people we used to be, whether we find them attractive company or not.”
