Slouching Towards Bethlehem by Joan Didion
“Remember what it was to be me: that is always the point” - Joan Didion.
In her essay ‘On Keeping A Notebook’ Joan Didion says writing notes is never about keeping an accurate factual record, it’s about ordering the chaos in our lives and threading the meaningless into something that makes sense.
Recorded memories are not about the details. By looking back through her notes, Didion found the descriptions she wrote about other people actually ended up being a way for her to remember previous versions of herself.
“Perhaps it is difficult to see the value in having one’s self back in that kind of mood, but I do see it; I think we are well advised to keep on nodding terms with the people we used to be, whether we find them attractive company or not.”
